To open the above data in SPSS:
- select the data (including the column headings) with your mouse
- copy it (Edit | Copy)
- open Excel (Start | Programs | Excel)
- paste the data into Excel (Edit | Paste)
- save the data as an Excel 4.0 worksheet (File | Save | Save as type: Microsoft Excel 4.0 Worksheet (*.xls)) (remember where you saved the file and what file name you used)
- click on OK when the "The selected file type does not support workbooks that contain multiple sheets" warning appears
- exit Excel (File | Exit)
- in SPSS, open the Excel file (File | Open | Files of type: Excel (*.xls)). Select the file you saved earlier
- in the dialog box that appears, make sure "Read variable names" is checked and click OK
- for each of the variables, set the appropriate properties (select a column, Data | Define Variables and then set the level of measure, labels, missing values, etc.)
