To open the above data in SPSS:

  1. select the data (including the column headings) with your mouse
  2. copy it (Edit | Copy)
  3. open Excel (Start | Programs | Excel)
  4. paste the data into Excel (Edit | Paste)
  5. save the data as an Excel 4.0 worksheet (File | Save | Save as type: Microsoft Excel 4.0 Worksheet (*.xls)) (remember where you saved the file and what file name you used)
  6. click on OK when the "The selected file type does not support workbooks that contain multiple sheets" warning appears
  7. exit Excel (File | Exit)
  8. in SPSS, open the Excel file (File | Open | Files of type: Excel (*.xls)). Select the file you saved earlier
  9. in the dialog box that appears, make sure "Read variable names" is checked and click OK
  10. for each of the variables, set the appropriate properties (select a column, Data | Define Variables and then set the level of measure, labels, missing values, etc.)
